Young Soul Rebels is Isaac Julien’s only feature film to date. While it was critically acclaimed (FIPRESCI Prize, Cannes 1991), the film carries a wealth of thematic ambition. Set in London in 1977, it follows Caz (Mo Sessay) and Chris (Nonyela), DJs at a pirate radio station. After the murder of a gay man, Chris is arrested for the crime. Julien combines historical revisionism, political engagement, and social accuracy, portraying 1977 as a hybrid era where punk, soul, and Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee intersect. The film highlights Black Soul culture and the solidarity between anti-fascist activists and musicians, as in the Rock Against Racism movement. With music from X-Ray Spex, Parliament, and Junior Murvin, Young Soul Rebels bridges Derek Jarman’s avant-garde with the urban chronicles of Stephen Frears and Hanif Kureishi, while presenting a stylish homage to the utopian potential of the time.
