The Last Spring + The Color of Pomegranates - Parajanov

  • Date: 06 February
  • Time: 18:30
  • Location: Filmhuis Den Haag

This double bill consists of the following titles:

The Last Spring (Mikhail Vartanov, 1961)
A lyrical portrait of rural Armenian life, capturing seasonal rituals, labour, and everyday gestures. Through a quiet, observational style, Vartanov reveals a deep connection between people, land, and tradition. The film moves gently between documentary realism and poetic reflection, foregrounding the passage of time.

The Colour of Pomegranates (Sergei Parajanov, 1969)
A radical cinematic poem inspired by the life of Armenian troubadour Sayat-Nova. Rejecting conventional narrative, Parajanov constructs meaning through symbolic tableaux, colour, movement, and ritual. The film transforms biography into a meditation on art, memory, and spiritual heritage.

This double bill will be introduced by Martiros Vartanov, heir to filmmaker Mikhail Vartanov and director of the Vartanov–Parajanov Institute.
