Arabesques on the Pirosmani Theme + The Last Spring - Parajanov

  • Date: 07 February
  • Time: 16:00
  • Location: Filmhuis Den Haag

This double bill consists of the following titles:

Arabesques on the Pirosmani Theme (Mikhail Vartanov, 1986)
A visual homage to Georgian painter Niko Pirosmani, blending stillness, rhythm, and observation. Rather than recounting a biography, the film evokes the spirit of Pirosmani’s work through everyday scenes, textures, and gestures. The result is a cinematic essay on creativity, folk culture, and artistic solitude.

The Last Spring (Mikhail Vartanov, 1961)
A poetic reflection on village life in Armenia, shaped by the cycles of nature and human labour. Vartanov’s attentive camera captures moments of work, rest, and ritual with quiet intimacy. The film reveals how tradition and landscape are inseparable from collective memory.

This double bill will be introduced by Martiros Vartanov, heir to filmmaker Mikhail Vartanov and director of the Vartanov–Parajanov Institute.
