Just Peace Movie Night: Guarding Gaia

Join us for a thought-provoking evening organised by Human Rights in The Picture, Lawyers for Lawyers and The Hague Humanity Hub, part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series.

On 28 January, we screen the documentary Guarding Gaia, which exposes the risk that environmental lawyers face in their everyday work. They represent marginalised groups in cases involving oil exploitation, deforestation, wildlife trafficking, mining and other environmental harms. By holding powerful economic actors to account, they become targets themselves. The documentary explores their daily work, often with limited resources and in isolation, facing growing risks of physical attacks, harassment and intimidation from state actors, organised crime and other hostile groups.

🎬 About the Film – Guarding Gaia
Guarding Gaia is a 30-minute documentary produced by Human Rights in the Picture. The film is a central component of a two-year campaign by Lawyers for Lawyers to support legal professionals at risk who work on the front lines of climate justice. Through this campaign, Lawyers for Lawyers aims to raise awareness about the crucial role these lawyers play, advocate for their safety, and call for greater international support so they can continue their essential work.

The movie screening will be followed by a moderated discussion in collaboration with Lawyers for Lawyers and Human Rights in the Picture.

The confirmed speakers are:

Ritwick Dutta, environmental lawyer from India, founder of LIFE

Tara Fiechter, Lawyers for Lawyers

Nadia Sánchez Castillo-Winckels, Climate Legal Consulting

Sjoerd Lopik, partner De Roos / research fellow Leiden University
