Just Peace Movie Night: Stranger in Paradise - Unesco Jongerencommissie

  • Date: 20 June
  • Time: 19:00
  • Location: Filmhuis Den Haag

On Friday evening, June 20, the UNESCO Youth Commission, in collaboration with Filmhuis Den Haag and The Hague Humanity Hub, is organizing a film evening as part of the Just Peace Festival in The Hague. The evening will revolve around the tension between policy and humanity in European migration policy, focusing on the question “Where do rules and justice clash—and where do they meet?”

The evening will start with a stimulating panel discussion with, among others, filmmaker Guido Hendrikx, director of the film “Stranger in Paradise,” which will be screened after the panel discussion. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to chat with the panel members and each other over drinks.

What happens when your hopeful dreams collide with an unyielding reality? In Stranger in Paradise, director Guido Hendrikx explores the European attitude towards migrants – confrontational, complex and painfully honest. The film unfolds in three acts, in which a teacher alternately adopts a dismissive, empathetic and bureaucratic attitude towards newcomers. Between reality and performance, a raw portrait of the gap between idealism and policy unfolds. Not a documentary, not fiction—but a razor-sharp mirror that forces the viewer to face their own position.
