Trio Da Kali delivers a fiery and authentic tribute to Malian song culture, with music rich in cultural depth and timeless beauty. The trio consists of singer and griot diva Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté, balafon player Lassana Diabaté, and bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté.
Trio Da Kali blends traditional griot music with modern influences such as jazz and funk, without losing its essence. Hawa’s voice is pure and expressive, while Lassana and Mamadou create a rich rhythmic and harmonic foundation. Da Kali literally means “to take an oath,” and that is precisely what the trio seeks to do: to make a “promise” to their musical heritage, which dates back to the time of Sunjata Keita, founder of the great Malian Empire. They carry forward the musical legacy of the Mande tradition, which reaches back to the 13th century and the era of Sunjata Keita.
On their latest album Bagola, contemporary themes take center stage, such as in the song Orpaillage, which describes the impact of gold mining on Mali. The album is a powerful tribute to cultural connectedness and musical renewal, resonating on a universal level.
