Thinking about war & peace: Threatened Security
- Date: 26 May
- label.tijd 19:30 - 21:00
- Location: Club Erasmus in de KB nationale bibliotheek

In the run-up to the NATO Summit on June 24-25 in The Hague, the KB is organizing three sessions on the broader theme of war and peace. The lightning-fast developments surrounding NATO and European defense demand depth. In these sessions we will place these developments in a historical framework.
Guest speakers and KB collection specialists will explore with the audience some recurring themes in a long history of thinking about peace and war. What is peace? How do you prevent war? And when do we feel safe?
All sessions can be followed separately. There will be room to ask questions during the sessions and at the connecting drinks.
Session 3: Threatened Security
The current geopolitical situation in the world is keeping people very busy. The balance of power seems to be shifting, old alliances are crumbling. To maintain peace, we must prepare for war, is the idea. But how tenable is that idea? What is actually the background of NATO and cooperation between the United States and Europe? Will there be a new Cold War? And what lessons can be learned from the past?
Professor of Global Economics and Geopolitics Bastiaan van Apeldoorn will use statements and questions to interpret the current geopolitical field of forces and its historical roots. Throughout the evening there will be opportunity for questions from the audience and these will be further explored and become part of the dialogue. Afterwards there will be subsequent drinks to continue the conversation.
