The Female Gaze
- Date: 07 March

Filmhuis Den Haag presents a special program around women filmmakers around International Women's Day. The Female Gaze celebrates women in the film profession and tells stories of women around the world. From comedy to drama to horror: The Female Gaze is everywhere.
Why?
First, because these are all fat films, many of which we haven't played before. Second, because it's necessary. Both in front of and behind the camera, women are underrepresented in the film world. This coupled with global gender differences in areas such as income, equality and safety makes us, as Filmhuis Den Haag, always make a strong case for women's voices to be heard and for their view to be seen on our silver screen. We do that throughout the year, but in March we do it a lot extra.
On the program
Throughout the month of March, we are screening modern classics directed by women. You will see, among other things, the enervating Girlhood by Céline Sciamma, lgbtqia+ comedy But I'm A Cheerleader by Jamie Babbit, Julie Dash' Daughters of the Dust (of great influence on Beyoncé's Lemonade) and Revenge, with which Coralie Fargeat proved herself as a high-profile director of feminist horror even before The Substance.
Central to the program is the work of Marleen Gorris, the Dutch filmmaker who was the first female director to win an Oscar with Antonia. Her films are all stories about women's experiences, made at a time when that was anything but obvious.
On March 8 we will pay extra attention to women's stories that urgently need to be heard. As a supporting film on this day you will see the short film Roya Was Here by Nafiss Nia, an ode to the power of women who do not allow themselves to be oppressed in Iran. Documentary Writing Hawa is a moving portrait of Afghan women in the prior to and during the return of the Taliban regime.
