A theatrical experience in a pearly universe where sexuality is a choice.

Queertopia is a conversion machine; whatever sexual preference you go in with, you come out queer. Because sexual preference is a choice. At least, in the parallel reality the creators sketch for you.

In this immersive experience, you are taken into a magnification of the public debate surrounding love and sexuality: the LGBTQ+ lobby is celebrating heyday and their propaganda has penetrated the capillaries of society. The movement introduces a new conversion method. You now have the opportunity to rediscover yourself and enter the conversion machine as a participant.

What happens when we shape a world in which we do not try to define love and attraction, when love is not part of a political agenda? What remains is the realization that our diversity is precisely our strength. That we do not have to define ourselves or the other. That in the very ambiguity we have more freedom.

With this project, creators Lut Bakker and Bart van de Woestijne break open the conversation about emancipation. Together with the audience, they go in search of a new language for loving. The personal experience invites you to explore what queerness can mean for you.

About the makers

In Queertopia, the qualities of Lut Bakker and Bart van de Woestijne merge into a whole. In her work, Lut attempts to break down role patterns in a humorous but confrontational way. She is socially critical and looks for the vulnerability of herself and her audience. In Werkplaats van de Woestijne, Bart forges life questions into thought experiences, in which you are forced to look for your answer to a big, impossible question. Bart peels political subjects down to existential questions. According to him, we need to think more about ourselves in order to change.

Short version project

Especially for Just Peace, Lut Bakker and Werkplaats van de Woestijne are developing a museum version of Queertopia in collaboration with The Grey Space. Step into the conversion machine and come out queer! Be transported into a pearly reality in which the LGBTQ+ lobby celebrates heyday: you now have the opportunity to choose who you love and rediscover yourself.
