'Nawi: Dear Future Me' is a film from Kenya that paints a harrowing yet hopeful picture of the fight against child marriage. The story follows Nawi, a 13-year-old girl from rural Turkana, who discovers that her father wants to marry her off in exchange for cattle. She chooses to fight back - determined to pursue her dream of going to school.
Shot in collaboration with local NGO Learning Lions, the film offers a rare glimpse into the lives of girls in remote regions. In addition to impressive cinematography and local talent, the film's social engagement makes it a must-see. 'Nawi: Dear Future Me' was also the official Kenyan entry for the 2025 Oscars.
