Lecture Colonial The Hague - an unfinished past

While walking through The Hague, you encounter traces of its colonial past everywhere. Just think of buildings like the former Ministry of Colonies, the many Indian and Surinamese restaurants or street names like Javastraat and Tulapad. In government city The Hague, decisions were made for a long time that had major consequences for millions of people in Indonesia, Suriname and the Caribbean parts of the kingdom.

The Hague Historical Museum organized an exhibition on the colonial past and present of The Hague in 2023. During this lecture we will take you through that exhibition in a bird's eye view. You will hear the stories of colonial administrators and of the people who at the time felt the consequences of their decisions. You will also discover the stories of some fellow citizens of The Hague. They show how The Hague's colonial past still affects people's lives today.
