Mika Schalks investigates their bittersweet relationship with the screen, queer storytelling and broadcast TV aesthetics
In “Geen Flikker Op TV” designer and visual artist Mika Schalks investigates their bittersweet relationship with the screen, queer storytelling and broadcast TV aesthetics, using stop-motion animation experiments, light boxes, and other objects. The title of their project refers both to the flickering of a TV screen and to the derogatory term still used for gay people in the Netherlands today, ‘flikker’. By exploring the history of queerness on Dutch television, Mika is developing a narrative in which the red, green and blue lights of the screen come to life.
