Film screening: Writing Hawa - Three generations of women against oppression
Movies that Matter and Theater De Vaillant present Writing Hawa, a gripping documentary about courage, perseverance and the power of education. This intimate portrait of three generations of Hazara women in Afghanistan shows how they struggle against patriarchal structures and political oppression.
The story
Hawa was forced into marriage as a child and did not learn to read and write until the age of 52. With the support of her daughter Najiba, the filmmaker, she starts a small textile business and dreams of a better future. Together with her granddaughter Zahra, she builds a new life, until in August 2021 the Taliban return to power. Their world collapses.
Filmed over a five-year period, Writing Hawa offers a unique insight into the lives of three women determined to take their destinies into their own hands. While Zahra is forced to return to her abusive father and Najiba flees to France, Hawa continues to fight for her freedom and independence.
A film with impact
Director Najiba Noori portrays her family's story with great empathy. Writing Hawa is a powerful reminder of the resilience of women who continue to dream despite oppression and insecurity. A story that touches and inspires.
Joint Iftar
