Three grandchildren bring their Indian grandparents to the place where they first set foot on Dutch soil - in this documentary, can they unravel their grandparents' years of hushed-up history?
A journey through history, a confrontation with silence. In Tussen wal en schip, three grandchildren—Jip, Kyron, and Benjamin—take their Dutch-Indonesian grandparents back to the place where they once first set foot on Dutch soil. With patience, love, and curiosity, they open up conversations about a past that remained unspoken for decades. How does this silenced history shape their identities today?
For many Indo-Dutch families, the colonial past remains a painful and often unspoken legacy. After Indonesia's independence, thousands were forced to migrate, their stories buried, never to be told. Now, three young descendants take an important step toward breaking that silence. Through meaningful conversations—marked by tenderness as well as confronting moments—Tussen wal en schip weaves these personal journeys into a broader story of colonialism, migration, and intergenerational trauma.
