The HCCH (Hague Conference on Private International Law) is an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to the progressive harmonisation of rules in the field of private international law (Art. 1, Statutes).

In a world where cross-border activities such as work, trade, study, travel and relationships are the order of the day, legal certainty is essential. However, differences between national legal systems often lead to uncertainty about jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition of decisions and cross-border cooperation.

The HCCH addresses these challenges by developing internationally agreed solutions through conventions (HCCH conventions) and soft law instruments, which guide states in harmonising their legislation. Its work covers three core areas:

  • International family law and child protection law
  • Transnational dispute resolution and apostille
  • International commercial, digital and financial law

Its ultimate goal: a world in which individuals and businesses enjoy legal certainty despite different legal systems.
