Terwijl wereldleiders zich voorbereiden om in Den Haag bijeen te komen voor de NAVO-top van 2025, roepen wij op tot een evenwichtige visie op vrede en veiligheid. Een visie die de mens centraal stelt.

In een tijd waarin de aandacht steeds meer komt te liggen op defensie en militaire paraatheid, dringen we aan op gelijke en aanhoudende aandacht voor en investeringen in het langetermijn werk van het opbouwen van veerkrachtige, inclusieve en rechtvaardige samenlevingen. Dit is geen alternatief voor veiligheid. Het is de basis ervan.

We nodigen alle individuen en instellingen die zich inzetten voor een rechtvaardigere en vreedzamere wereld uit om deze verklaring te onderschrijven en samen te bouwen aan een toekomst waarin vrede niet alleen wordt beschermd, maar ook wordt gecultiveerd.

Openbare verklaring voor vrede en resilience voorafgaand aan de NAVO-top van 2025
Uitgegeven tijdens het Just Peace Festival, Den Haag

Terwijl wereldleiders zich voorbereiden om in Den Haag bijeen te komen voor de NAVO-top van 2025, roepen wij op tot een evenwichtige visie op vrede en veiligheid. Een visie die de mens centraal stelt.

In een tijd waarin de aandacht steeds meer komt te liggen op defensie en militaire paraatheid, dringen we aan op gelijke en aanhoudende aandacht voor en investeringen in het langetermijn werk van het opbouwen van veerkrachtige, inclusieve en rechtvaardige samenlevingen. Dit is geen alternatief voor veiligheid. Het is de basis ervan.

We kunnen niet alleen vertrouwen op militair geweld om conflicten te voorkomen en op te lossen. We hebben ook beleid nodig dat de sociale, economische en politieke wortels van conflicten wegneemt. Dit betekent investeren in veerkracht, in stabiele instellingen, rechtvaardige economieën, inclusieve en rechtvaardige samenlevingen en de rechtsstaat. De complexe en zich opeenstapelende mondiale problemen van vandaag: conflicten en geopolitieke spanningen, de klimaatcrisis, toenemende ongelijkheden vragen allemaal om een evenwichtige aanpak. Onze collectieve veiligheid en welzijn overal, ook hier in Nederland, is ervan afhankelijk.

Echter, terwijl de militaire uitgaven toenemen, nemen de investeringen in het voorkomen van de grondoorzaken van conflicten af.

We moeten nu handelen. Hier in Den Haag, in heel Nederland en daarbuiten werken veel individuen en instellingen onvermoeibaar om conflicten te voorkomen, mensenrechten te beschermen, het internationaal recht te handhaven en de fundamenten te leggen voor rechtvaardige en vreedzame samenlevingen. Deze inspanningen zijn essentieel voor de wereldwijde veiligheid en moeten naast defensie worden gewaardeerd en van middelen worden voorzien.

We roepen daarom politieke leiders, het maatschappelijk middenveld, internationale instellingen en bezorgde burgers op om:

  • Beleid voor te trekken dat het aanpakken van hoofdoorzaken erkent als een essentieel onderdeel van onze benadering van beveiliging naast defensie;

  • Ervoor te zorgen dat het nastreven van vrede een gedeelde en gefinancierde prioriteit blijft in zowel nationale als internationale agenda's;

  • Meer te investeren in de ontwikkeling van stabiele instellingen, rechtvaardige economieën, inclusieve en rechtvaardige samenlevingen en de rechtsstaat;

  • De essentiële bijdragen van vredesopbouw- en humanitaire organisaties en professionals wereldwijd te erkennen en ondersteunen;

Zoals het Just Peace Festival ons eraan herinnert, wordt vrede niet gevonden in de afwezigheid van oorlog - het wordt gevonden in het opbouwen van veerkrachtige, inclusieve en rechtvaardige samenlevingen als de weg naar duurzame vrede. Laten we die waarheid niet uit het oog verliezen. En laten we ernaar handelen.

We nodigen alle individuen en instellingen die zich inzetten voor een rechtvaardigere en vreedzamere wereld uit om deze verklaring te onderschrijven en samen te bouwen aan een toekomst waarin vrede niet alleen wordt beschermd, maar ook wordt gecultiveerd.
