Las Américas Film Festival: A new look at South American cinema in The Hague

With a selection of exceptional and innovative feature films, Las Américas Film Festival offers a unique cinematic experience that brings together art, identity and social themes.

From 3 May to 25 May 2025, Filmhuis Den Haag i.c.w. Stichting Humans of Film will present the brand new Las Américas Film Festival in The Hague. Expect an inspiring and artistic programme full of groundbreaking films from South and Latin America and the Caribbean. Dedicated to arthouse and transnational cinema, the festival highlights the wealth of stories, cultural expressions and visual poetry of this continent – a continent still too often underexposed within the film world, despite its artistic power and urgency.

A festival of cinema, dialogue and connection
Las Américas Film Festival is more than just film screenings: it is a meeting place for culture lovers, filmmakers and thinkers. Through collaborations with local initiatives and organisations from The Hague, the Brazilian Embassy, International Queer Migrant Film Festival and Pride Den Haag, a programme of Q&As, panel discussions and special screenings is offered in which art and social issues reinforce each other. In a city profiling itself as a candidate for European Capital of Culture 2033, this festival contributes to The Hague’s international character and cultural diversity.

Opening film, film programme and thematic focus
The first edition opens with Horizonte (2024), a visually breathtaking and content-rich film that sets the tone for the festival. Also during this edition, we will screen a number of new unreleased films such as, Ainda Não é Amanhã (2024), Tesis sobre una domesticación (2024) and Ato Noturno (2025), as well as some classics such as Central do Brasil (1998) and Una mujer fantástica (2017).

This year’s programme focuses thematically on the culture that unites us, or, Cultura nos Une, highlighting themes such as identity, motherhood and sisterhood, ‘queer and transgender joy’, migration, the impact of globalisation and cultural traditions in innovative ways.

With this first edition, Las Américas Film Festival lays the foundations for a lasting platform celebrating Latin, South American and Caribbean cinema in the Netherlands. The films screened transcend borders and offer perspectives that are both locally and internationally relevant. Come and be immersed in a film experience that brings together values such as aesthetics, content and dialogue!
